A guide to help you on your next install
Ponds can come in many fashions and have separate traits that may lend it to better usage by you and your family. In this guide we will cover the different types of ponds and how they are different to help you choose what's right for your next pond.

Retention and natural ponds:
Retention and natural ponds are probably the most common pond you might see. These offer a great place for storm water to collect and drain off into the ground water table. These types of ponds can feature fountains that help aerate the water or they can be pretty plain, sometimes having a dock or other entry point where people can swim or enter the water.
Fish Ponds and Koi Ponds:
These type of ponds are some of the most desirable as some people enjoy being able to keep fish in a mostly natural habitat and all the wildlife that comes with a fish pond.
Fish Ponds often require a bit more maintenance than a natural pond as fish create waste. Creating and keeping a natural or artificial method to dispose of fish waste can create extra associated installation and maintenance costs. This maintenance can look like a powerful filter system, a system that uses natural plants and animals that feed on this waste, or a combined system with everything working in harmony.
Fish and Koi Ponds are great to look at, but if you're not fond of having to call a pond maintenance service to check up on it, do pond cleanouts, replace filter systems, check on the health of your fish, and winterize your pond, this may not be the best choice for you.
Additionally, if you have a Koi pond, you need to make sure there is at least 60 inches of depth in your pond to ensure your Koi make it through winter.

Plant Ponds:
Small and medium plant ponds can create all the beauty of a fish pond without too much added maintenance. These ponds are a great way to create the mood around your property. Picking the right plants negates the need to have a powerful filtration system. You may get some visitors in your plant pond, but not the type that will add any more maintenance than normal.
Swimming Ponds:
When considering a fun summer option for you and the family to enjoy, don't forget swimming ponds! While swimming ponds don't carry that fresh blue hue of a swimming pool, they are a great natural option to get around all those harsh chemicals and some of the traditional utilities associated with a traditional pool.
The great part about swimming ponds is you can customize the look, size, and shape of these to almost anything you want. If you have kids and only want the swimming pond to be 4 FT in a certain area or maybe you want the whole thing to be 4 FT deep, then that's perfectly fine. Alternatively, maybe you have a strange shaped yard or existing outdoor living features in your yard, maybe you need something that will fit just right, a swimming pond might be for you!

Above Ground Ponds:
The last pond we will talk about are above ground ponds. These can be advantageous when lots of buried utilities are present or maybe you just prefer to have the water level higher where you can see it from a balcony or have accessibility issues.
These type of ponds can really be transformed into any of the other ponds except for the retention ponds that were talked about earlier in this article. These will typically run a little bit higher than any of the other options because of the weight and force of water. These will need some engineering input if large enough, but can be highly customizable from the type of stone to the retention of the water, there are many options to consider in design and features.
